Determination of the length of coronal loops from the decay of X-ray flares II. Stellar flares observed with ROSAT/PSPC

چکیده
We illustrate a procedure to estimate the length of stellar coronal loops from the decay of X-ray flares observed with ROSAT/PSPC. As we did in the first paper of this series for solar flares, we use extensive hydrodynamic modeling, and the synthesis of observable quantities from the model results, to obtain an expression for the loop length in terms of parameters readily derivable from spectrally-resolved X-ray light curves, such as those of ROSAT/PSPC. The length estimate takes into account the effect of possible sustained heating during the decay and is derived from a quantity measuring PSPC spectral shape variations (Spectral Shape Index, SSI), which is a temperature indicator, and from the global light curve. Self-consistency tests on models have shown that the loop length estimation should not suffer from systematic errors, and that its uncertainty ranges from ∼ 20% for ∼ 40000 counts in the flare observation to ∼ 70% for ∼ 1000 counts. The effect of interstellar absorption is discussed and the appropriate corrections derived. As test applications, we derive the loop length for two flares, one on the M star AD Leo and the other on the M star CN Leo.

In previous works we have developed a method to convert solar X-ray data, collected with the Yohkoh/SXT, into templates of stellar coronal observations. Here we apply the method to several solar flares, for comparison with stellar X-ray flares. Eight flares, from weak (GOES class C5.8) to very intense ones (X9) are selected as representative of the flaring Sun. The emission measure distribution...

We show how to estimate the size of spatially unresolved solar and stellar coronal flaring regions from the X-ray light curve and time-resolved temperature and emission measure values during the flare decay. Bymeans of extensive hydrodynamic modeling of decaying flaring loops, we propose and test a relationship between the decay time of the light curve in the band of a specific instrument and t...

متن کاملA Systematic Study of X-Ray Flares from Low-Mass Young Stellar Objects in the ρ Ophiuchi Star-Forming Region with Chandra
We report on the results of a systematic study of X-ray flares from low-mass young stellar objects, using two deep exposure Chandra observations of the main region of the ρ Ophiuchi star-forming cloud. From 195 X-ray sources, including class I–III sources and some young brown dwarfs, we detected a total of 71 X-ray flares. Most of the flares have the typical profile of solar and stellar flares,...
